This is a fabulous original solid bronze 4 x 3 1/4 panama pacific exposition hanging bell. A veyr nice tone. eBll hangs freely. This is an early dated and impressed pat. Applied for on the bottom. This is found on teh early original bells. Bell is totally mint example in perfectly preserved condition. A wondreful original patina. Very clear detailed casting. This hanging and ringing bell is used in this souvenir to depict the california mission bells along the el camino real. A nice bell for all msision bell collections. The panama-california exposition of 1915 was intended to celebrate the completion of the panama canal as well sa mark the emergence of san diego as an international port and an american city on the rise. Wiht its theme of human progress, the exposition followed in the footsteps of previous showcase events. Despite the intentions of the san diego boosters and exposition planners, however, plans for an international fair were dashed as a result of a competing fair in san francisco that deprived the panama-california exposition of both national and international support. Undaunted, the san diego exposition and its supporters went forward with slightly altered plans.
The result was a spectacular fair noted less for what was missing and more for its architecture, its reconstruction of san diego's central park area (renamed balboa park for the event), and for its successful run over a period of two years.
